I have spent my entire adult life working with independent musicians. First, as a lead singer of various indie rock bands in Ottawa, as a producer and songwriter. In my early twenties, I learned how to manage our band and spent a lot of time booking gigs, running the fan club, applying for grants, shopping for deals, etc… This is when I realized that I may in fact be better at working for bands then being in them.
At 23, I packed up my guitar and my $600 (it sounds cliché but it’s true) and drove my beater car to Vancouver. I spent those years in poverty, on welfare, often hungry, surrounded by despair in a sketchy rooming house on the east side, and without my roots. It was the best thing I ever could have done. I rebuilt. I wrote and recorded the greatest songs of my life. I learned to appreciate life’s true meaning and dedicated myself to helping others. It was during those long drives alone between Ottawa and Vancouver that I fell in love with Canada (and Terry Fox!).
In 1996, I co-founded Indie Pool in my Vancouver apartment when a miracle $5,000 credit card came in the mail. As president, I helped build the company from the ground up, working only for Canadian unsigned artists, without a single corporate client. Indie Pool’s mission is to pool the resources of Canadian indie artists to create greater access and to lower prices through buying power. Indie Pool has worked for over 60,000 Canadian bands, administers 200,000 songs on iTunes and currently has about 15,000 active relationships with Canadian artists.
I am married with 3 kids and live downtown Toronto. Life is definitely nutty right now, but I could not be happier or luckier to be alive, healthy, living in Canada, with a fun job and great family. Knocking on wood now…
