FACT #1: It is very difficult to get rotation on commercial radio stations, and nearly impossible without an active radio promoter. Independent artists should not waste their money sending their music to radio stations without a promotional plan to support it.
FACT #2: For artists that have decided to seek radio play, there is no better way to deliver the music to radio stations than through DMDS (Digital Music Delivery Service). Over 95% of the music played on commercial radio is received digitally. Distributing music to radio stations used to involve sending CDs, printing cover letters, stuffing in bubble envelopes, researching radio stations, finding the right contact info and paying shipping fees but these days, radio programmers use DMDS almost exclusively to receive and review new music.
